Why We Teach | NCTIES 2019

NUITEQ's VP of Strategy and Content, Dr. Edward Tse, joined our US partner, Clear Touch Interactive, for the event North Carolina technology in education society (NCTIES 2019), in Raleigh.

He was excited to meet teachers, hear their stories and learn more about their experiences engaging students by using technology.

Wanting to learn more about how teachers use augmented reality in the classroom, he met up with opening keynote speaker, Marsha Moore Sirkin from Carteret County Schools, who gave a talk on this topic.

From the interview with her, we conclude that a safe environment where students are allowed to make mistakes is essential for creativity. This isan important reason why using natural user interfaces in schools is helpful. When people can easily experiment, undo, and try different options, they feel much more comfortable with creation.

Marsha’s comments about a safe environment made Dr. Tse curious about how we motivate teachers who don’t feel comfortable around technology. To explore this, he spoke to Instructional Technologist Hannah Jiminez from Rochelle Middle School. The efficiency of class time is a key outcome that appeals to a wide range of teachers. Technology is powerful because of its ability to manage scale. Scale is the only way we’re going to build an education that is for everyone.

Further, in the video, we learn about how the story of "why we teach" impacts a teacher’s motivation. Dr. Tse interviews Educational Eye Exam author Alicia Ray and finds out that every educator has a story of why they got into teaching, and this why, is often the intrinsic motivation that so many educators lean on when times are tough.
